November 2007 When Sam's previous owner went to view a "Free Horse" in answer to an ad in the newspaper, he found an underweight and neglected horse. He brought him home where he and his wife took care of Sam and were able to help him gain some much needed weight. After several months, due to their own health issues, the couple were no longer able to continue caring for Sam and called Angel Horse Rescue to give Sam a home and avoid any risk of him ending up at an auction and ultimately, the slaughterhouse. Sam is still gaining weight and requires senior feed along with special supplements for his cracked and brittle hooves. He is a sweet and gentle soul and likes to follow us around while we do our chores. Sam is extremely submissive with the other horses. At this time, he is our self appointed "greeter" of visitors to the rescue and we allow him to roam freely around the barn area separate from the other horses, until we can fence in a separate paddock area for him. We have been told that Sam is an OTTB (off the track thoroughbred) and that his registered name is "Mister America". His teeth indicate his age at approx. 10 yrs or less and he does have a lip tattoo. We are currently researching his pedigree and record with the Jockey Club. We have our vet out to examine Sam and he has some arthritis in his knee as well as an old injury to his rear pastern that has caused a bony growth. Once Sam reaches a healthy weight, he will be available for adoption as a companion horse.
JANUARY 2008 We were finally able to track down Sam's information through his tattoo with the help of a friend in the thoroughbred racing industry. Sam's registered name is "mramerica" and he was born on March 25, 2000. Sam ran in 20 races during his career, coming in third place 6 times. He last raced as a six year old which is probably when he injured his foot and ended his racing career. He has been regaining his weight steadily and he now shares a pasture with Whiskey, another thoroughbred gelding.

OCTOBER 2008 Sam is an incredibly sweet and gentle fellow and a couple of months ago we paired him up with Smokey, our little yearling from the feedlot. Sam tends to be at the bottom of the pecking order and when we turned him out into the large pasture with the main herd this summer, he was picked on and not allowed into the herd. He and Smokey get along in perfect harmony and they are very happy and content to share a pasture and stall.
