June 2006 Rugby arrived at the rescue as a result of a Tulsa SPCA cruelty investigation. He needs to gain weight and will be gelded before he is available for adoption. Please check back often for updates on his progress. Please consider sponsoring Rugby during his recovery. October 2006: Our vet came out to geld Rugby and Chance, however after examining Rugby, she felt that it would be better to wait a little longer for him to gain some more weight and body condition. We gave him his West Nile shot and other vaccinations as well as his scheduled worming. We also had the farrier out to trim his hooves again and he behaved very well for all of his treatments. He stood patiently and quietly when he was tied waiting his turn while the vet gelded Chance. Once he is fully recovered, we will more completely evaluate his training, however he currently exhibits a friendly, quiet disposition and is non-aggressive with the other horses so we expect him to mature into a wonderful little guy. November 2006: Sadly, our little Rugby passed away suddenly, early in the morning of November 6. We don't know the exact cause of his death, but there were no signs of injury nor any evidence of thrashing to indicate colic or distress. We expect that he died as a result of some unforeseen internal complication stemming from his long period of neglect. Rugby was our little resident pest, always following visitors around, begging for attention and, of course, treats. He will definitely be missed. One thing we are grateful for - Rugby's passing didn't go unnoticed in a barren pasture, alone, suffering, unloved and uncared for. Thanks to a concerned neighbor and a diligent cruelty investigator, Rugby lived his final months with a full belly, enjoying tummy scratches and the loving treatment he deserved. |
