NOVEMBER 2008  Princess arrived at the rescue through an owner relinquishment.  She is underweight and her rear fetlocks are severely dropped and nearly touch the ground when she walks.  She recently had a foal that is now weaned and her owner no longer wanted her due to her crippled legs.  She has been suffering from this condition for a period of years according to her owner.  We will consult with our vet and have him evaluate her condition, however we feel it has progressed beyond a treatable point.

JANUARY 2009  We had our vet come out and he has advised us that the suspensory ligaments in Princess' rear legs have broken down.  There are treatments for this condition when caught in the early stages, however her condition is way beyond that.  As for her quality of life, she will never get better however at this time she still gets around and can lie down and get up unassisted.  Pain associated with this condition occurs from the arthritis that has developed in both of her fetlock joints.  The vet has advised us to avoid putting any more weight on her as that would aggravate the situation. He suggested that we continue giving her herbal anti-inflammatory supplements to help ease the arthritis somewhat. When she gets to the point where she can no longer get around or needs help getting up after lying down or if she shows signs of distress or acute pain, we will make the decision to humanely euthanize her.  Until then, Princess will have sanctuary here with us at the rescue.
