March 2006: Hope is an approximately 6 month old filly. She arrived at the rescue underweight and very weak. When she arrived, she fell down after being unloaded off the trailer and was unable to muster the strength to get up. She simply laid still for several minutes on the ground and then finally, with great effort, stood up and we were able to get her into the corral. It was difficult for us to give her shots of penicillin for her runny eyes and nose because she had very little muscle tissue on her neck or hindquarters. She developed patches of oozing skin along her spine and then broke out in severe ringworm on her face and body. Her weakened immune system wasn't able to fight off the fungus and bacteria she was exposed to at the auction where our volunteer purchased her. She had already been sold through two auctions in her short little life before being brought to the rescue, and we feel she would have soon died without proper care.

April 2006: Hope is doing better and is more bright eyed and alert with each passing day. She learned the feeding routine very quickly and is at the gate nickering eagerly as soon as she catches sight of anyone coming her way. She still has some discharge from her eyes, so we will begin another round of antibiotics. Her immune system is still weak due to her severe malnutrition, but the second round of antibiotics should hopefully help her overcome the infection.
June 2006: Hope is looking much, much better. She has gained weight well and has filled out nicely. Her thick, coarse unhealthy coat has been shed, the ringworm is gone and the hair has almost completely grown back on her face. She is growing like a little weed and recently we had to switch to a larger halter. She is very curious about people, but still shys away from being touched.
September 2006: Hope has become much more friendly and trusting around people. She will stand still to be petted and loves to be fed treats.
July 2007: Hope is strong and healthy and ready to begin training. We will be moving her along with the other rescue horses to our new 64 acre facility this month. Once there, we will allow her to settle in while the barn, round pen and paddocks are completed and then we will begin training her under saddle next spring after she turns three. She is currently available for adoption to someone experienced with young horses and gentle training techniques.
