Bud...

Age: Approx. 30 years      Training: retired

Breed:  Grade QH     Gender:  Gelding

 Passed away:  October 2006

Bud had a couple of episodes of colic, but has recovered and is doing well.  The vet detected a heart condition during his examination of Bud for colic, so even though Bud is well broke to ride, he will be retired here at the rescue permanently as a companion to the other elderly residents to eliminate any stress of being relocated to a new home.  Bud is non-aggressive and defers to the older mares, so he must be fed separately to ensure he gets his full ration. He still has energy, and is not always easy to catch, however once caught, he behaves like a perfect gentleman and is a sweet, gentle old soul.

July 2006: We have turned Bud out into a pasture with Hope and Faith, our two young fillies, so that he can eat in peace without the older mares chasing him away from his feed and the hay bale.  All three eat at the hay bale with no bickering.  He seems to enjoy his new pasture and the girls like having "uncle" Bud around.

October 2006: Bud is still not gaining weight and has had another episode of colic.  He has stiffness in his rear legs due to arthritis and he continues to lose sight in both eyes.  His heart condition, advanced age and failing health are beginning to cause him undue suffering and most likely he would not survive another winter.  It was decided that euthanization before severe cold weather would be the best and most humane treatment for Bud.
