FEBRUARY 2011 Maverick arrived at the rescue as an abandonment case. He was found in a roadside ditch where he had fallen and couldn't get up. He is very underweight and has an old injury to his hip/leg which makes him unsteady at times although he has learned to compensate very well. Information given at the time he was found stated that he used to be a rodeo pick up horse until a bull charged him resulting in his injury. No one would claim ownership and the sheriff deemed him abandoned and we were requested to take custody of Maverick. He's a sweet fellow and we have put him on an equine senior diet including soaked beet pulp, a digestive supplement and soaked alfalfa hay cubes to help him gain some much needed weight. We are concerned that the additional weight may cause problems with his injured leg, so we will monitor him closely. We don't want to cause him any additional discomfort, but allowing him to remain in a state of starvation is not a humane option.
