Ella, a 20 year old Arabian mare that arrived at the rescue in November 2009 is pregnant and due to deliver in approx. mid to late March 2010. We've created this page to post pics and updates as her pregnancy progresses and the baby arrives.

ELLA	IT'S A BABY GIRL!!

MARCH 2nd - The vet came out today for Ella's checkup and to give her vaccinations. She has a small sore in her mouth in the front on top, but is in good shape and ready for the baby. She is not yet bagging up, so we aren't expecting baby for at least another 3 weeks. Once her udder begins to fill, it will be approximately 2-3 weeks before birth and typically once she starts to drip milk, the baby should be here within 24 hours. We have moved Ella into her own private stall and separate paddock area to provide a safe, secure area for her and the new arrival.	APRIL 1, 2010 She's here! Ella gave birth to a baby girl at the stroke of midnight on April 1, 2010. Both mama and baby are doing fine. There were a couple of scary moments - first when Ella began giving birth she was too close to the stall wall and there was no room for the baby to get out, so we had to get her to stand back up in mid-labor and have her lie down in a better spot. After that, things went well but the little one did not tear through the bag and was suffocating until we tore it away from her nose and head so she could take a breath. She aspirated some birth fluid "stuff", but after about an hour her lungs were clear and she was breathing without the rattling noise. She does have a condition known as "windswept" where her rear legs are curved, but the vet does not feel it is severe enough to require surgery and that she should straighten out within the first 3 months on her own. Her bloodwork came back great and she is a spunky little gal that keeps her mama on the move.
MARCH 16th - No baby yet, but we are getting closer. Ella has begun to produce milk so we should be having a baby within about 2 weeks or less.
