SEPTEMBER 2008   Fast and Fatal's owner brought her to the rescue so that she would not face the risk of slaughter.  She was born April 9, 1988 and was lightly raced as a 2 and 3 year old.  She had a fairly successful racing career - winning 3 races as a 2 year old - and she has been a broodmare since 1994.  Although she was bred earlier this year, she has come up open and was heading for the auction this fall.  Due to her age and not being in foal, she would have likely brought a very low price at the auction,  putting her at high risk of purchase by a killer buyer for the slaughterhouse.  Fortunately, her owner chose to bring her to our rescue instead.  She is a very sweet mare, in good condition for her age.  She is a special girl and deserves a special home for her retirement.

JANUARY 2009:  We have had Fast and Fatal's teeth floated by our vet.  She had been having some difficulty chewing and passing grain in her manure.  We also had our vet give her annual vaccinations while she was at the clinic.  She is doing well and even putting on a little weight.  We've been calling her everything from Big Mama to Old Mama to Sweet Mama and have settled on just plain Mama.

APRIL 2009:  We have had a lot of rain here lately and when we had the farrier out to trim hooves, he found a mild case of thrush on Mama's front feet.  He was able to cut away the affected area and we have applied Koppertox to the bottom of her hooves to prevent any additional bacteria.  Mama stood quietly for her trim other than the occasional "come hither" nickers to the boys in the next stall.  Mama is looking for her forever home where she can enjoy a peaceful retirement and would make a wonderful pasture pet.  Although a little feisty around the boys, Mama has been submissive around the other mares she's been pastured with here.

AUGUST 2011 Fast and Fatal has been enjoying her retirement roaming freely out in our large 50 acre pasture.  The extreme heat this summer seemed to be getting to her, so we brought her in and turned her out in a smaller pasture with our two oldest residents so that we could keep a closer eye on her and make sure she was getting plenty of hydration by adding soaked beet pulp along with soaked alfalfa cubes to her daily diet.  She quickly settled in and is doing much, much better now and is back to her old sweet self.
